A few days later, Sheila waited with the children at Selly Oak station. She had written to Audrey, asking her to visit, and Audrey seemed to have leapt at the chance. It was still the summer holidays and she had two lads to keep occupied.

‘I’m afraid I’ve nowhere for you to stay,’ Sheila wrote. ‘I wish I had.’

Audrey wrote by return of post, saying they would come up early, for the day.

When she got down from the train with two boys – Edward, who was seventeen, now taller than Audrey; and Charlie, fifteen, about the same height – Elaine, who was ten, stared fearfully at them. She was the only one who might remember the Vellacott boys at all. Sheila laughed at the look on her face.

‘Did you think they’d still be little boys, Lainy?’ she teased.

There were hugs and greetings. Edward and Charlie were shy, but nice lads, Sheila thought, remembering the tense, angry boys she had first met when she moved to live with Audrey and her husband.

‘You do look well, Sheila,’ Audrey said as they exchanged kisses.

‘So do you!’ Sheila said. Audrey looked every bit the country gentlewoman, in her hat and twinset. Sheila felt suddenly shy again – of seeing her, of showing Audrey her own place. It was the first time they had ever met anywhere except on Audrey’s ground.

‘Oh, Lainy, look at you!’ Audrey exclaimed, cuddling her. ‘And Robbie! And this must be little Jonny. Oh, you’ve a lovely family,’ she said as they started walking. ‘And I can’t wait to see this little house of yours.’
